St. Martin’s is a safe and welcoming space for all people, including neurodiverse people. We believe that God has made you as you are, and you have gifts that we celebrate with you. We have some sensory tools available that you may use during Mass, but please feel free to bring whatever makes you comfortable; noise cancelling headphones, weighted blankets, a favorite fidget, etc. Please know that you may sit, stand or take a break as needed, or you may wish to take advantage of our quiet spaces. We are glad you are here!

A PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) is a pictorial guide that helps teach some autistic and nonverbal people about the activities in the Mass. It also provides a predictable roadmap of the liturgy. It helps teach the person when we should sit, stand, kneel. sing, be quiet, etc. There are also pictures that your child can use to tell you they need a break, need to go to the restroom, etc.

There are copies in the entrance way (the narthex) that you may use during worship. Please feel free to download a copy and practice with your child beforehand.

You will also find a basket containing fidgets, and other materials to help neurodivergent people feel less anxious. Please know that it is ok at any time for a neurodivergent person to step outside for a moment if they are feeling overwhelmed.    The Lady Chapel is also equipped with sensory friendly materials if you or a child need to take a break in a quiet space. There are speakers in there so that you may continue to listen to the Mass.
